Background: Colombia is at a crossroads as the reform government of President Petro and Vice President Marquez seeks to act on the recommendations of the 2022 Truth Commission and the 2016 Peace Accords.
Colombia remains the most dangerous country in the world to defend land and the environment. Berenice Celeita and her association NOMADESC have a long history of courageous work with Afro-Colombian, Indigenous, trade union and women’s collectives. Recognized with the Robert F Kennedy Human Rights Award in 1998, Berenice coordinates the Peoples’ Intercultural University and the Round Table for Human Rights, Guarantees and Protection in Buenaventura. Canada has a close relationship with Colombia as a major donor to peacebuilding and a partner in the Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement.
