The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is an opportunity for members and activists to come together in person to and inspire one another\, to learn about each other’s activism efforts and campaigns\, to share stories and experiences\, and to listen\, learn and participate in workshops\, our sessions and panel discussions. \nThe AGM is also Amnesty Canada’s highest decision-making body\, and a place where important governance work happens\, including electing our National Board and voting on resolutions that guide us in how we do our work. Throughout the weekend\, you will meet and interact with individuals and groups from coast to coast to coast who share your commitment to human rights while making important decisions to guide our work. DESCRIPTION:Join a hands-on community action event to make visible our support for defenders of Indigenous lands\, water\, forests\, air and a healthy environment. In times of climate crisis\, these defenders are a beacon of hope. Yet they are under increasing vicious attack because their efforts challenge the profits of powerful companies and their backers. \nCome hear the inspiring words of defenders from across our hemisphere and help us unveil a new tree that honours a call made to us by our partners at the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations in Honduras (COPINH)\, the organization founded by murdered Lenca Indigenous rights and river defender Berta Cáceres. \nTogether with community artist Claudia Salguero\, we will paint stones to create a vibrant\, eye-catching Living River of Solidarity that flows out from the tree to engage passersby. \nThere will also be music\, refreshments and lots of opportunities to make your voice count by signing petitions in support of threatened defenders in Canada\, Colombia\, Brazil\, Mexico\, Ecuador and Guatemala. \nWhen: Saturday September 24 between 2 and 6 pm – drop by any time and join the action! \nWhere: Outside Amnesty’s Ottawa office\, 312 Laurier Ave E\, Ottawa\, ON K1N 1H9 \nThis event is free!
